Feeding Your Dog

When it comes to food, the only thing your dog cares about is taste, so it's up to you to provide him with the proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals he needs for optimal growth and health.

AnnStef's suggests you feed your puppy Iams Smart Puppy, Eukanuba Small Breed Puppies or Royal Canin Puppy 43 Formula.

For older dogs, Iams Adult Dog, Eukanuba, or Royal Canin Yorkshire 28 Formula.

These are all premium dog foods that will keep your dog in optimum health. The cost to feed these small dogs is not prohibitive, and the extra money you spend on premium quality food, rather than buying grocery store dog food is well worth the price.

Treat Time!

Your dog is going to snack as much as you will allow it to. It's up to you to make the healthy choices. Always check the label of commercially available treats. Crunchy snacks should have less sugar, so they are better for your dog's teeth and waistline. Crunchy treats also promote dental hygiene and chewing exercise for your dog.

You can look no further than your kitchen for healthy treats for your dog. Carrots, broccoli stems, green beans, and peas, either cooked, raw or frozen are great treats for your pet.

We, at AnnStef's, like to feed our Yorkies and Maltese Cheerios as treats. They are whole grain, low fat, and the dogs love them.

Keep the meat and cheese treats to a minimum, as they tend to be high in fat and calories.

The Well Groomed Yorkie

Always remember that grooming should fit your lifestyle. If you have the time to devote to brushing and grooming a Yorkie in full coat, that's great, but if you have a busy lifestyle, both you and your dog would benefit from having him groomed in a puppy cut.

Always be viligent about flea and tick control. We recommend a monthly dose of flea preventitive, such as Advantage, and spraying your yard chemically during the seasonal months to prevent outside infestation.

Since Yorkies have fur that is more like human hair, a weekly bath is essential. I have used Crown Royale products on my dogs for years. I highly recommend
Crown Royale, Biovite OB Shampoo #1, Crown Royale Condition Plus Concentrate, and Crown Royale Bodifier Texturizing Spray. Their Magic Touch Conditioning Spray is the ultimate finish for the show dog. It gives luxurious sheen, has no heavy build-up, repels dirt, and prevents coat matting. It is formulated with conditioners

Travel Tips

Traveling with your dog can be a wonderful experience if you adhere to a few simple rules.

  • Always crate or contain your dog for it's safety.
  • Always bring bottled water, as unfamiliar water can give your little friend an upset tummy.
  • When traveling by car, stop often to give you both a break, and ALWAYS have your dog on a leash.
  • NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES! Keep your pet safe by using only a static leash. Retractable leads give a dog too much freedom, and they can easily get into harms way.
